The Art of PhotoJournalism

I chose this image because it symbolizes the architecture of ancient Hindu civilization. It makes me see the art of building palaces and the development of architecture for buildings during the 19th century as well. The technology of building was not quite developed at that time and looking at a building like this surprises me. I wonder about the types of technology used at that time for building such a beautiful piece of art.

Quality of Light: The use of light has provided a new life to this image. Even the stick like thing in the top of the palace is distinguishable. Due to proper use of light, we can guess that it must be a beautiful sunny day. It also enabled us to know that the trees are moving which may be due to blowing wind.

Obvious main subject, about ¼ to 2/3 of image area: The main subject of this image is the palace. The photographer has made proper use of the space to illustrate every detail of the palace and used remaining space to illustrate the outside environment. The use of space to illustrate outside environment has added an extra dimension to this image.

Keep it simple: The image clearly describes only the palace and there is no addition of any other objects in the image. This has provided proper attention to this elegant palace. The use of any other object would have diverted our attention from the building.

Being a mother myself, I know the pain or stress one has to go through when they see their children under stress. This image shows an immigrant mother with her two children. The image clearly indicates the pain and sorrow in her face. This image evokes an emotion in my face as well and asks me to help her. The photojournalist has done a great job by revealing the sorrow of this helpless mother to the world.

Subject’s Expression: Capturing the natural facial expression of the subject is the art of a true photojournalist. There is no hamming by the subject in this image. This makes this iconic photo truly magnificent. The world can see the true condition of the subject through this image.

What feelings does the image create?- This image creates a feeling of kindness in people and wanting to help. The image clearly illustrates the miserable condition the subject’s family is going through and evokes a feeling of compassion in the viewers.

In or out of focus: The photojournalist has clearly kept the subject in focus. The focus on the main subjects is to create sympathy towards the subject by clearly representing her conditions. The addition of the two children adds essence to the image. It describe that the two children’s life is connected with the mother.

This image shows Sudanese rebels walk past dead Sudanese government soldiers in a temporary military camp. Whenever I see this image, it makes me feel like humanity is dead. Through all these years, history has taught us that war cannot be the solution to any problems, but we tend to follow that path. I also feel like there should be a strong determination in all international communities to end this type of war going on around the globe.

Background compliments or detracts from: The background of this photo adds the main essence of this image with the barren desert. The background truly represents how cruel a human being can be. A dead body should always be respected and properly cremated. This image represents the inhumanity present in the rebel walking past the dead soldiers.

Abstraction: This photo is the representation of how cruel a human being can be after losing their humanity. The large land of desert sand represents that there is no help coming from any part of that land. Also, the stone represents the war going between the two subjects.

Rule of thirds: The photojournalist put the dead body of the soldiers off center. This was done to draw concentration of the people towards the Sudanese rebel. This also shows the barren land and the weapons used by the rebels to kill the soldier.
